STL Youth Jobs connects young people ages 16-24 with meaningful employment while building transferable job skills. STL Youth Jobs’ mission is to bridge the divide between our region’s youth and the growing skills gap in our workforce. STL Youth Jobs envisions a city where St. Louis youth have the opportunity they need to succeed and St. Louis businesses have the workforce they require to compete.
In 2012, a diverse group of funders, individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and civic leaders, came together to discuss major issues facing St. Louis youth and soon realized that without intervention the future for St. Louis youth and the region’s workforce looked dismal. In response, a committed group of community stakeholders including the Incarnate Word Foundation, Mayor Slay’s office, Comptroller Darlene Green’s office, MERS Goodwill and the St. Louis Community Foundation, joined together to develop a creative cross-sector solution that would address the alarming rate of juvenile violence, connect young people with meaningful summer employment and help St. Louis’ most vulnerable youth become a more ready and capable workforce.
Summer employment shows compelling impact on youth staying in school, increased academic success, higher adult incomes, decreased propensity for violent behavior and youth obtaining the skills needed for building lasting careers. Since the spring of 2013, STL Youth Jobs has provided paid work experience, job readiness and financial literacy training, career and mentoring services to nearly 2,000 youth and has become the largest and most recognized provider of youth employment in St. Louis.
